About Dr. Omar Abbas

Dr. Omar Abbas is a resident physician at Henry Ford Health in Detroit. Dr. Abbas’s journey in medicine began with a fascination with biology and human physiology, which solidified during medical school. His love for medicine stems from a deep-seated desire to push scientific boundaries and help people, making him a committed and compassionate professional in the medical field. Dr. Abbas received his medical degree from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

Documentation Dilemma

Dr. Abbas started his residency in Neurology after medical school. Despite finding the field of Neurology intellectually stimulating, the extensive documentation required in clinical practice became a significant burden. The need to document thoroughly, coupled with being understaffed, pulled him away from what he enjoyed most—the art of medicine.

As a resident seeing patients in the hospital and in the clinic, Dr. Abbas faced an overwhelming administrative burden. About half of his day was consumed by documentation tasks, often extending his work hours late into the night to complete notes, a story all too familiar to residents. The pressure to stay organized and ensure comprehensive notes for each patient made the process daunting. The workflow was inefficient, with residents often using pen and paper and different colored pens to keep track of everything, only to transfer these notes to the EMR later. This inefficiency and constant pressure left Dr. Abbas feeling as if he was no longer able to enjoy the art of medicine anymore.

Path into Pathology and Healthcare Consulting

Dr. Abbas decided to pivot his medical career by switching his specialty to Pathology and helping companies solve problems within healthcare. His switch to pathology was driven by the desire to focus on the core aspects of medicine without the encumbrance of extensive documentation. In Pathology, he found a field that allowed him to collaborate closely with surgeons and clinicians, helping them provide the best treatment for their patients by providing critical consultations and reporting accurate diagnoses, without the heavy administrative burden Dr. Abbas also wanted to use his medical education and clinical experience to help companies solve problems within healthcare. Dr. Abbas has worked with startups in digital health and AI in the healthcare space.
